Google is continuing its push to make the Apps collaboration suite useful for enterprises with a new feature that lets administrators manage how their users are able to share files. When users send a link to a spreadsheet, document or presentation that’s saved in Google Drive to people who don’t have access to it, Google automatically prompts senders to allow those recipients to access the file. The update unveiled Monday makes it possible for Apps administrators to restrict how that sharing happens by reducing the options available to users. How does one find bargains in the market? Eddy Elfenbein of Crossing Wall Street suggests that investors start by examining two factors: a stock’s dividend yield, and its amount of debt relative to equity. Performing such a screen will generate stocks that are attractive in terms of their yield — which may hint at low valuations — but may be less risky than other high-dividend stocks, especially in an environment in which the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates. “Basically, it gives you companies with fiscal health, and also with good valuations,” Elfenbein said Thursday on CNBC’s “Trading Nation.” Performing…
n the future, computers may be able to read your thoughts through a connection with the brain. DARPA wants to create a device that could help make that happen. The device, which will be the size of two stacked nickels, will translate information from a brain into digital signals for use on a computer. The device is being developed as part of a four-year, US$60 million research program funded by DARPA — the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which operates under the aegis of the U.S. Department of Defense. The program, called Neural Engineering System Design (NESD), is one of…
Editor’s Note: David Katz, president and chief investment officer of Matrix Asset Advisors, shares his top 2016 stock picks for CNBC Pro’sPlatinum Portfolio. After one of the most difficult periods for value investing in years, we believe value is poised to have a solid 2016 and should perform very well on a relative basis. As such our picks are focused on “deeper value” stocks. All of these names got beat up in 2015 and sell at fire sale prices; yet they have strong franchises, good balance sheets and favorable long-term outlooks. [“source -pcworld”]
The Swiss National Bank’s (SNB) decision to scrap its cap on the franc against the euro a year ago today shocked markets and sent the country’s currency rocketing 30 percent. One year on, the franc is still high, 10 percent up against the euro, and export-focused Switzerland is still feeling the pain. Looking back at the SNB’s shock move James Watson, MD for UK and Europe at ADS Securities, told CNBC “a lot of people were caught in the headlights.” Thomas Hodel | Reuters A man looks at a board showing currency exchange rates in Bern January 15, 2015. While the Dow Jones industrial average was only in a correction ahead of Friday’s trading, the carnage in small cap stocks has been much worse. “You could argue we’re in a stealth bear,” said Jurrien Timmer, director of global macro research at Fidelity Investments. “If you look deeper within the market, the Russell 2000 is down [about] 22 percent from its high. That’s bear market territory,” Timmer told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Friday. “The markets are very oversold, extremely oversold. As of yesterday, only 9 percent of stocks in the S&P were above their short-term moving average.” Read MoreBob Doll:…
Big data may hold a world of untapped potential, but what happens when your data set is bigger than your processing power can handle? A new algorithm that taps quantum computing may be able to help. That’s according to researchers from MIT, the University of Waterloo and the University of Southern California who published a paper Monday describing a new approach to handling massively complex problems. By combining quantum computing and topology — a branch of geometry — the new machine-learning algorithm can streamline highly complex problems and put solutions within closer reach. Topology focuses on properties that stay the…
n 2008, netbooks sparked a PC-buying frenzy as hundreds of low-power laptops were available for as little as $150. But those days are long gone, and low-cost PCs—particularly with Windows—are becoming scarce. As the overall PC market shrinks, mobile devices have replaced low-cost PCs for many users. Those who are looking for a new PC more often than not are interested in a high-quality machine; buyers of low-cost PCs are currently in the minority. It will be possible to find low-cost laptops, just not as many as in the last few years. You’ll find the best deals with Chromebooks—which are…
