A study from Harvard released Monday largely refutes claims that wider use of encryption in software products will hamper investigations into terrorism and crime. It predicts that the continued expansion of Internet-connected devices — such as smart TVs and vehicles, IP video cameras and more — will offer fresh opportunities for tracking targets. “Law enforcement or intelligence agencies may start to seek orders compelling Samsung, Google, Mattel, Nest or vendors of other networked devices to push an update or flip a digital switch to intercept the ambient communications of a target,” it said. “These are real products now.” The study…

Jeffrey Hahner upgraded to Windows 10. But the new version isn’t updating itself as it should. Operating systems need to update regularly to fix bugs and close security holes. So if Windows 10 isn’t successfully updating, you’ve got a serious problem. Even worse, the failure to update itself might be a symptom of a malware infection. A quick note: I had to deal with this situation myself recently, but I didn’t think to grab images off the screen at the time. So some of the images below are faked. Try these fixes until one of them works: [Have a tech…
Samsung’s smartphone problem can be summed up by a single phrase slipped into last year’s fourth quarter earnings statement: “softening demand.” People just aren’t buying as many smartphones as they used to, and in 2016 they’ll be less inclined to immediately upgrade once a new model is announced. This isn’t just a Samsung problem. Apple is also feeling the pressure—in his earnings call last week, Tim Cook downplayed the fact that iPhone sales are expected to decline in the forthcoming quarter. It looks like this is going to be a popular theme expressed by other smartphone manufacturers throughout the year. So why are…
Oppo F1 is the first member of the new F-series, which will be focusing on luxurious design and premium camera experience. It is now available on pre-order in Vietnam, but more markets will be getting it soon. The Oppo F1 houses within a thin 7.25mm aluminum unibody and packs a 5″ IPS display of 720p resolution protected by a curved Gorilla Glass 4 piece. The chipset in charge is Snapdragon 616 with an octa-core 1.7GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 405 GPU, and 3GB of RAM. The extra amount of RAM will surely make happy the multi-tasking fans. The rear camera is…
Like it or not, even the best of events have to come to an end, which was also the natural faith of CES 2016. It was a reasonably eventful show and while we didn’t get much in terms of new flagships there was plenty of new hardware in Las Vegas. Below is an extensive table of all the things we spotted at the venue and deemed intriguing and relevant enough to share. As far as handsets go, Huawei brought a few devices to show and we were also lucky enough to be able to play around with each of them…
Neffos is the new brand established by TP-Link for its first entries in the smartphone market. The Neffos C5L, Neffos C5, and Neffos C5 Max by TP-Link are the first three smartphones aiming to carry the flag for the brand. All three Neffos smartphones run on Android 5.1 Lollipop, skinned with lightweight-looking proprietary launcher. The Neffos C5L is the smallest entry of all – it has 4.5″ FWVGA display and runs on the Snapdragon 210 chip (4x Cortex-A7 at 1.1GHz, Adreno 304, 1GB RAM). While the hardware doesn’t sound impressive, it should be more than enough for a sub-HD smartphone.…
AnTuTu posted on its Weibo account the detected specs of the Samsung Galaxy S7, the 5.1″ one (model number SM-G935A). This, as it turns out, is the Snapdragon 820 version, which has essentially the same specs as the Galaxy S7 edge+ version. The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow (with TouchWiz, of course). This particular unit comes with 64GB of storage, but obviously that’s no guarantee that Samsung will be moving up from using 32GB as base. And also no word on a microSD slot, as expected. Samsung Galaxy S7 specs as detected by…
On Thursday evening, Starbucks reported what Jim Cramer considered to be a fantastic quarter. Yet shareholders responded by dumping the stock hard. “When will Starbucks and its amazing management team finally be given the benefit of the doubt?” the “Mad Money” host asked. Cramer considered the latest quarter to be the strongest quarter in the company’s history. For those shareholders who dumped the stock, he traced the issues to two unexpected negatives: softer sales in Europe after the Paris tragedy and the slowdown in Chinese growth to 5 percent from 6 percent. When Cramer spoke with Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz…
The rally of the past two days seems to be policy rhetoric driven, Kate Moore, chief investment strategist at JP Morgan Private Bank, said in an interview with CNBC. The comments came as stocks attempted to make gains Thursday and Friday, after the worst three-week losing streak for all three major averages. Many market watchers have attributed the current volatility to diverging economic policies and fears of a global recession amid low oil prices. “Every time there’s good news from a policy maker, or a promise, markets breathe a sigh of relief,” Moore told “Power Lunch” on Friday. “I want…
If it feels like your wallet is finally getting a taste of that cheap oil that has been unsettling the market for weeks now, you’re right. WTI crude oil was down to a little under $30 a barrel earlier this week from the recent peak in the summer of 2014, or about $1.85 on a per-gallon basis. At the same time, data from the Energy Information Administration show that the average price of gasoline is down about the same amount to $1.90. That means the savings from the world’s massive oversupply of crude are making their way into American gas…
