Facebook-owned WhatsApp for JioPhone is set to get a big feature as the team behind KaiOS is working towards letting users add status messages, the media has reported. This would let its users upload photos, videos, or GIFs as statuses for 24 hours.
According to Joe Grinstead, who leads software engineering for WhatsApp on KaiOS, the status feature for JioPhones is at “Gold Master” stage that means the feature would see the light of the day soon, according to an Android Central report. The team is also working to introduce more useful features to the platform over the coming months.
However, it should be noted that WhatsApp for Android devices would always have more features than WhatsApp, courtesy of the constraints that KaiOS has. KaiOS currently supports apps such as YouTube, WhatsApp, and Facebook.
KaiOS is a mobile operating system (OS) based on Linux and was developed by Kai OS Technologies Limited, a US-based company.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp in September 2018 announced it was available on Reliance JioPhones across India. The messaging platform had built a new version of for JioPhone, running on KaiOS operating system.
“The new app offers the best of WhatsApp including fast and reliable messaging and the ability to send photos and videos — all end-to-end encrypted. It’s also easy to record and send voice messages with just couple taps on the keypad. To get started, JioPhone users only need to verify their phone number and then they can begin chatting with other WhatsApp users one-on-one or in groups,” the company had written on its blog.
Meanwhile, the status feature on WhatsApp was rolled out back in 2017 when the company introduced this new feature that allows users to upload photos, videos and GIFs as “statuses”.
