Video games can be played for fun and relaxation, as well as for competitions and computer instruction. The goal of some video games is to help players develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. In the 1950s and 1960s, prototypes for the first video games were developed; by the 1970s, a whole industry was developed around video games. In fact, there were so many video games made in 1983 that the industry was in trouble due to the high number of low-quality games. Because of this crisis, publishers and producers of video games had to be very careful about the games they made, and the majority of video games were made by big companies in the 2000s.

But the rise of the internet made it possible for small game developers to start making their own games, which are called “Indie Games.” Video games were once considered a hobby or pastime for a long time; however, electronic sports began to gain popularity toward the end of the 2000s. Professional video game players compete in electronic sports, or Esports. Computer scientists created simple electronic games in the 1950s to see what computers could do. These games were the first video games. Early computers could be programmed to play games like tic-tac-toe, which were used as demonstrations of how powerful the computers were. One of the less well-known facts about video games is that many early developers only used them to test the capabilities of the computer and didn’t think they would be popular. Spacewar! was the name of the first video game that was released, and it was developed between 1961 and 1962. Two players could simulate a space battle with very basic graphics. Programming languages, developed by computer programmers in the 1970s, made it simpler for people to create programs, including video games. As more people realized the potential of video games, an increasing number of computer programmers began creating their own games. The development of video games picked up speed as a result, and before long, the first home video game console and arcade video game were made and sold. Mechanical games like claw machines dominated arcades in the past, but video games started to take over in this decade.
