Facebook at Work, Facebook Inc’s professional version of its social network, is expected to launch in the coming months, after spending a year in tests, a company executive said. The new service, geared towards workplace collaboration, is nearly identical to its ubiquitous social network, with a scrolling news “feed”, “likes” and a chat service. “I would say 95 percent of what we developed for Facebook is also adopted for Facebook at Work,” Julien Codorniou, director of global platform partnerships at Facebook, told Reuters. However, Facebook at Work users will maintain special profiles that are distinct from their existing Facebook profiles.…

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday praised Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for emphasising the difference between Islam and terror, after the billionaire social network tycoon posted a message defending Muslims against discrimination. Erdogan, who once threatened to ban Facebook in his country, used his official page on the website to respond to Zuckerberg both in Turkish and in English. “I highly value Mark Zuckerberg’s message for pointing out the profound difference between Islam and terrorism since these two concepts are often mentioned in the same breath these days,” he wrote. “As I always express on different platforms, Islam is…

The European head of Facebook is under investigation in Germany over the…

Have you felt like walking away from Facebook or to shut down your account swearing never to return, only to meekly log back in a week later? You are not alone. Researchers from Cornell University have found four key reasons why people make the pledge not to log in to Facebook but ultimately could not resist the allure of Facebook’s social network. “The first reason is perceived addiction. Those who feel that Facebook is addictive or habitual were more likely to return,” said lead researcher Eric Baumer. One participant described this habitual aspect by saying, “In the first 10 days,…

A famous app called “Most Used Words on Facebook” has been shared thousands of times but it may be stealing the information of those who use it, media reported. The viral app is hoovering up all of people’s personal information and is able to sell it on to whoever it wants, The Independent reported, citing a Comparitech report. The app is most often seen when a user posts the word clouds that it generates. It pulls information from users’ statuses and finds the words that they have used the most, assembling them into a picture that shows the most common…

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has used a secretive authority to compel Internet and telecommunications firms to hand over customer data including an individual’s complete web browsing history and records of all online purchases, a court filing released Monday shows. The documents are believed to be the first time the government has provided details of its so-called national security letters, which are used by the FBI to conduct electronic surveillance without the need for court approval. The filing made public Monday was the result of an 11-year-old legal battle waged by Nicholas Merrill, founder of Calyx Internet Access, a hosted…

Mark Zuckerberg, who famously urged his company Facebook Inc to “move fast and break things,” is taking a similar approach to the staid world of philanthropy, indicating his new venture will get directly involved with politics and may even turn a profit. The project, called the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, is structured as a limited liability company. That means, unlike a traditional charitable or philanthropic foundation, it can make political donations, lobby lawmakers, invest in businesses and recoup any profits from those investments. “They are not behaving like a traditional philanthropy,” said Leslie Lenkowsky, professor of public affairs and philanthropy at…

Facebook will stop tracking browsers of Facebook pages in Belgium who are not signed into a Facebook account, seeking to comply with a court ruling last month ordering it to do so or face daily fines, the company said on Wednesday. The company’s action means Belgians will have to log into Facebook before they can see Facebook pages, forcing them to create and sign into an account if they want to view the pages or related content. Previously non-users could view public Facebook pages from sports teams, celebrities, tourist attractions and businesses without needing to log into Facebook. As a…
