Rhode Island has awarded about $1.2 million in grants to give more students access to career education programs.

The state’s Department of Education says the innovation and equity grants will be used to expand access for historically underserved students.

Eight schools will receive about $150,000 each over two years, using existing state funding for career and technical education.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo says this will help ensure every student is exposed to these learning opportunities.

The awardees are Chariho Tech, Exeter-West Greenwich High School, Warwick Area Career and Technical Center, Rhode Island Nurses Institute charter school, the MET School, Smithfield High School, East Providence Career and Technical Center and Mount Pleasant High School.

Schools sought to bring more women, minorities and low-income people, among others into their programs.
