Today I spent one hour playing the game called Whamageddon. Which is tragic, since the game lasts almost a month. The rules are simple: From December 1 to December 24, avoid hearing the Die Hard of Christmas songs, the song that’s not really a Christmas song but still gets played over every CVS sound system all December: Wham’s “Last Christmas.” (If you’re playing, don’t click that link.)
Yesterday, only an hour after my editor Slacked me about the game, “Last Christmas” came blasting over the office stereo. And that afternoon, just in case I wanted to call the first one a gimme, the song came on again. Christmas: ruined.
But you can still play! In fact, you’re already playing now, whether you like it or not, like a festive version of The Game. So double-check your Spotify playlists, wear headphones next time you go shopping, and don’t be a character in a holiday-themed romantic comedy. (Covers don’t count, so go nuts with those.)
And when you inevitably hear the song and lose, you can commiserate with the other losers on the Whamageddon Facebook page.
