Meet Raghuram Rajan’s teacher who now works for tribal people of Madhya Pradesh

Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan was once the student of ex-IIT Delhi professor Alok Sagar, who left his prestigious IIT job in 1982 to serve the tribal people of Madhya Pradesh.

In brief: Know about this noble person

  • The Professor did his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and also pursued Master’s from IIT Delhi. After completing PhD from Houston University, Texas, USA, he joined IIT Delhi as a teacher in 1980 but resigned from his job two years later, in 1982
  • He has been working for the tribal people in Betul and Hoshangabad districts of Madhya Pradesh for the past 32 years

  • The Professor single-handedly planted around 50,000 trees in the area and is serving these people through Shramik Adivasi Sangathan
  • A resident of Delhi, Sagar’s father, who was an IRS officer, passed away last year. His mother was a physics teacher in Miranda House, DU and his brother is a professor in IIT Delhi

Due to the Ghodongari assembly elections, the country came to know about this noble person when he revealed his identity after District Administration ordered him to leave the place citing security reasons.
