The Ministry of Education will on Friday this week, launch the first ever national dialogue on education quality and learning outcomes in Kenya.
The dialogue will take place at a nairobi hotel.
Education Policy makers, academicians, researchers, and development partners will, among other issues, discuss the state of education in Kenya, and in particular, quality in education and the expected learning outcomes for learners.
The outgoing Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr. Fred Matiang’i and the incoming Education Secretary, Dr. Amina Mohammed will give the opening address before formal launch of the discussions.
The dialogue comes at the backdrop of reports that the Ministry of Education conducted monitoring learner achievement in class 2, 3, 6, and form two in the last four years.
The study in question is by the National Assessment System Monitoring Learner Achievement (NASMLA), domiciled at KNEC.
The studies have revealed low achievement of basic literacy and numeracy skills, over age pupils, absenteeism and class repetition among other findings which have great implications on education policy.
The studies will be made and will form the basis of discussions.
The assessments test literacy, numeracy and life skills—which are the foundation stone for effective learning in later schooling and after formal schooling.
