In a sigh of relief for all board students and their parents, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently come up with a new plan (three-language formula) for Class 10 Board examination.

According to a new proposal, if a student is currently studying in Class 7 or above, need not worry about shifting to schools affiliated to CBSE where three-language formula is applicable.
Here’s why:
- It is speculated that the government has decided this keeping in view the schedule of students studying in the current academic session and does not want to disturb them.

When did the proposal of three-language formula come in?
- Last year, in December, CBSE had sent the proposed three-language formula for secondary education to Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, clearing all the doubts over it and when the new scheme would be implemented
- As per sources, there were differences in the existing three-language formula of CBSE and the proposed scheme:
- The scheme extends till Class 10
- It will not include foreign languages as one of the options for students.
Key notes of the new plan:
- In the new plan, candidates are required to take up three Indian languages listed in schedule VIII of the Constitution, one of which could be English
- The three languages would be main subjects in the Class 10 board exams
- Also, students can study a foreign language, or a non-listed Indian language, as an additional subject, which will be non-qualifying in nature.
According to a senior HRD official, even if the new plan is approved by the ministry and CBSE starts working on the scheme it would not “happen before 2019-20”.
“When the scheme is implemented will depend on the how soon the policy is finalised. Once the policy is framed, the schools would need to be given time as under this formula a student will get the option of 22 languages, for which teachers need to be appointed,” said CBSE official in recent TOI report.
