A few days ago, Huawei unveiled its new Mate 9 pair and really upped the stakes in the high-end smartphone market. Besides its undoubtedly impressive specs sheet, the Mate 9 also shines with the new and improved EMUI 5. It brings about numerous tweaks and changes, most of which stem directly from user feedback. And even though, Huawei specifically outlined the close integration between the OS and its new Kirin 960 chipset, it is good to hear that the OEM plans to bring the ROM to other handsets as well. The U.S. trade deficit fell to a more than 1-1/2 year low in September amid rising exports, but a slump in imports pointed to slowing domestic demand. The Commerce Department said on Friday the trade gap narrowed 9.9 percent to $36.4 billion, the smallest since February 2015. August’s trade deficit was revised slightly down to $40.5 billion. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the trade gap decreasing to $37.8 billion in September…

Troy Harvey | Bloomberg | Getty Images Job fair The national unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent in October, the Labor Department said Friday. But relying on that one headline number as an indicator of the economy’s direction ignores important information just below the surface. Every month on “Jobs Friday,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases a bunch of data, each point of which provides its own unique perspective on an aspect of the nation’s employment situation. Economists look past the official unemployment rate — that 4.9 percent figure, also known as the “U-3” rate — to other metrics that…

But the bigger number in the report could be wages, with average hourly earnings climbing 10 cents and reflecting a 2.8 percent annualized increase, according to the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number would seem to solidify a Fed rate increase in December, as the market has been expecting, though average weekly hours…

While all eyes are on Tuesday’s presidential election, Goldman Sachs told clients the real story for the market was the better-than-expected increase in wages contained in Friday’s jobs report. This inflationary trend should cause certain stocks to outperform into the new year, the firm said. “While investors focus on the election, stocks focus on rising wages and expected inflation,” Goldman Sachs’ David Kostin wrote in the note to clients Friday. “Investors’ other focus has been the 3Q earnings season, which saw more frequent beats…

While the world was watching to see the season finale of “America Votes,” GoPro had a little news of its own to share. Late Tuesday night, the company announced an official recall of its Karma drone, which rolled out in late October. The $800 flying device can apparently lose power during operation—presumably causing it to come tumbling out of the sky. GoPro says the issue affected only a “small number of cases.” Nevertheless, GoPro still felt it was serious enough to recall every single Karma out there—and it won’t give you a new one in exchange. Around 2,500 Karma drones…
