A group of researchers at McGill University in Montreal has recently developed a portable, paper-based electrochemical platform with multiplexing and telemedicine capabilities that may enable low-cost, point-of-care diagnosis of HIV and HCV co-infections within serum samples. Credit: C. Zhao/McGill University HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are among the leading causes of death worldwide, and an estimated one-third of people with HIV/AIDS are co-infected with HCV. This makes them more likely to suffer worse outcomes and poses severe public health challenges within Kenya and other African countries as well. While rapid point-of-care tests for diagnosing sexually transmitted infections are…

Workers representing the repair system known as nucleotide excision repair (NER), repairing DNA and snakes, representing proteins that bind DNA at gene promoters, potentially preventing them from doing this. Credit: Jackie Mostek UNSW medical scientists have discovered that DNA repair is compromised at important regions of our genome, shedding new light on the human body’s capacity to repair DNA damage. Repairing damage in DNA from anything that causes a mutation, such as UV radiation and tobacco smoke, is a fundamental process that protects our cells from becoming cancerous. In the study published in the journal Nature, the scientists analysed more…
Researchers have shown that various types of intestinal bacteria might be factors in both causing and preventing obesity, and in other conditions and diseases. Now, a UCLA study suggests that it could also potentially be used to reduce the risk for some types of cancer. The research, published online April 13 in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE, offers evidence that anti-inflammatory “health beneficial” gut bacteria can slow or stop the development of some types of cancer. Ultimately, doctors might be able to reduce a person’s risk for cancer by analyzing the levels and types of intestinal bacteria in the body,…
Source: Facebook, Rosegal via Buzzfeed Facebook is working on new ways to police advertisers whose products are “overwhelmingly unsatisfactory,” after a BuzzFeed News report this week showed a cottage industry of shady online retailers operating openly on the social network and using its advertising services to target users. More from Buzzfeed: Say no to the dress The dark, scammy history of JustFab and Fabletics Here’s why you should think twice before clicking on that $12 dress on Facebook BuzzFeed’s story on Tuesday described how a group of Chinese clothing companies, using names like DressLily, TideBuy, and Zaful, have been able…
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg attempted to demonstrate his company’s live-streaming capabilities Wednesday afternoon, but may have learned the perils of live broadcasting in the process. After a few seconds of talking into a camera, Zuckerberg stood up and the video stream went down. On his page, the video link still said it was “live,” but continued to play an 8-second clip of a gray couch with some chatter in the background. It was unclear what led to the issue, but the video page indicated at the time that 118,000 people were concurrently watching, so there was certainly interest in the…

Apple stock has been floundering for the past 11 months, falling nearly 22 percent since its high of $134.54 in April 2015. But according to one market technician, the shares are setting up for a huge move higher. “Momentum is in favor of the stock,” Greg Harmon, founder and president of Dragonfly Capital, said Wednesday on CNBC’s “Trading Nation.” By Harmon’s work, the tech giant’s shares are setting up for a textbook bullish technical pattern. Specifically, he says they are forming what’s called a “cup and handle” pattern. Technicians often look to such patterns as catalysts to buy stock. The…
Formula E has unveiled the AI-powered race car that will be used in its Roborace competition for driverless vehicles. Ten teams, each with two cars, will compete in a series of one-hour races over the Formula E championship season, which starts later this year. All teams will have the same driverless cars; what sets them apart will be the artificial intelligence they use to control them. Formula E announced the Roborace series last year, calling it a “battle of algorithms.” The driverless cars will reportedly hit speeds of 300kph (186mph). Now the design of the vehicle has been decided, thanks to…
IBM says it wants to make intelligent computers that can make decisions like humans. This week, it shipped the NS16e, its largest brain-inspired computer yet, and has big goals ahead. The company plans to create bigger versions of the NS16e—which was purchased by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—to come closer to matching the scale of a human brain. “Perhaps one day we may see a single rack of neurosynaptic system with as many neurons and synapses as in a human brain,” said Jun Sawada, a researcher at IBM, in ablog entry. The brain can be viewed as an extremely power-efficient biological…
