A day after Republican Donald Trump was elected as the next U.S. president, San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams said that the U.S. central bank is nerdy, geeky, but above all apolitical, and will remain so. “Having that independence is very important,” Williams said, adding that criticism of the Fed is part of democracy and is to be expected. “We are focused on the economy, focused on achieving our goals; it is not a partisan activity.” ADVERTISING inRead invented by Teads Andrew Harrer | Bloomberg | Getty Images President of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, John…

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, underscoring the robustness of the labor market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 254,000 for the week ended Nov. 5, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Claims for the prior week were unrevised. It was the 88th consecutive week that claims remained below 300,000, a threshold associated with a healthy labor market. That is the longest stretch since 1970, the department said. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast first-time applications for jobless benefits falling to 260,000 in the latest week.…

If it works, it could sweep the globe, finally convincing Europe and Japan to enact long-stalled reforms. But that will raise a critical question…
Paul Bradbury | Getty Images Donald Trump’s political ride has been anything but predictable. But his presidency may follow at least something that resembles a script. Here’s a stab at what the next four years might look like, from an economic and market perspective. 1. His first big legislative victory will be infrastructure, with a bill north of $1 trillion that will get more Democratic votes than Republican. 2. His second biggest legislative victory will be a companion jobs bill that will combine tax credits and a slew of other measures aimed at closing the skills gap. 3. There will…

How to make one, and what you can do with it. COMMENTS Josh Norem PCWorld Nov 14, 2016 3:00 AM You never know when you’ll need a Windows recovery drive, so the time to make one is now—and it’s very easy to do. If your PC’s OS went sideways, you could easily revert to the way things were on day…
