Here’s a sad story about Sony: In the four years that I’ve been reviewing Androidsmartphones, Sony’s Android devices have typically scored remarkably well. But the company hasn’t put as much marketing mojo behind its smartphone lineup like it has with some of its other product divisions, and it’s difficult to keep up the excitement after you realize that once Sony announces a smartphone, it feels like forever until it materializes in the U.S. This is why I can’t allow myself to get too excited over Sony’s new lineup of Xperia X devices: the Xperia X Performance, Xperia X, and Xperia…

The January jobs report Friday missed expectations. How can investors trade the number using history as a guide? The U.S. economy created 151,000 jobs in January versus the Wall Street consensus of 190,000. The data will now be a crucial factor in how the Federal Reserve guides the market’s expectations on the future path of rate hikes. Using hedge fund analytics tool Kensho, CNBC Pro screened for which securities do well when the jobs report beats or misses consensus by 5,000 over the past decade. Here is what we found. After three tough months for Apple, the tech giant is finally finding a bottom, according to one trader. Apple shares are down more than 20 percent since November due to concerns about slowing iPhone sales and a difficult economic environment in China. But that selling makes this the ideal time to make a bullish play on the stock, according to Andrew Keene of AlphaShark. Keene believes that new products will give Apple a much-needed boost. Keene also noted that the company is still holding plenty of cash. “In the short term, we might get some volatility, … [but] it is…
Although Apple does not exhibit at Mobile World Congress, the giant trade show in Barcelona, the company casts a long shadow over it. The iPhone maker’s influence there extends to app developers, accessory vendors and, now, the debate about securing digital identity. In a keynote session on security at the show, moderator Michael O’Hara asked presenters whether they sided with Apple or the U.S. government in the legal dispute over whether Apple should help the Federal Bureau of Investigation unlock an iPhonebelonging to the employer of one of the San Bernardino attack suspects. For Simon Segars, CEO of ARM, the…
Tyson Foods — The poultry producer earned $1.15 per share for its latest quarter, well above estimates of 89 cents a share. It also raised its 2016 forecast and added 50 million shares to its stock buyback program. Estee Lauder — The cosmetics maker beat estimates by 8 cents with quarterly profit of $1.19 per share, with revenue also beating forecasts. However, its fiscal 2016 forecast is below estimates, largely due to the negative impact of a stronger dollar. Moody’s — The credit rating agency reported profit of $1.09 per share, beating estimates by 4 cents a share, with revenue…
CloudFlare has launched a domain name registration service with enhanced security controls designed to prevent domain hijacking, a serious attack that can have far-reaching consequences for companies. Its Registrar keeps a close eye on domain name registrations and changes to registrations with the intention of preventing attackers from gaining control of a domain name, said Ryan Lackey, who works with CloudFlare’s security product strategy. The idea came after CloudFlare began looking for a domain name registrar with better security, Lackey said. CloudFlare is a constant target for attackers. They couldn’t find anything suitable, so CloudFlare decided to develop its own. “We…
Cisco Systems CEO Chuck Robbins gave up a chance to strongly support enterprise mobility partner Apple in its fight with the FBI over iPhone encryption. Asked about the controversy during a press briefing at Mobile World Congress, Robbins said he doesn’t think vendors should put back doors in products. But when it comes to personal privacy versus national security, “There needs to be a balance,” he said. Ultimately, the two sides will need to compromise, Robbins said. “Our situation is completely different” from Apple’s, because Cisco’s customers make the choice whether and how to use encryption on the company’s products,…
Gold and silver hit multimonth highs Thursday, as industrial metal copper rose to the highest level since the beginning of the year. This as the dollar continued to lose value against other major currencies. Notably, it is a move that is strongly counter to the trend seen over the past few years, whereby metals prices have fallen mightily as the dollar has soared. “We’re seeing a massive short-covering rally right now, that’s all it is,” commented David Seaburg, head of equity sales trading at Cowen and Co., in a Thursday “Trading Nation” interview. The bright lights of Las Vegas await AMD, which wants to change the face of gambling with its new graphics-focused G-series processing chips. The chips will bring 4K graphics to gambling machines and could lead to a more immersive gaming experience, said Scott Aylor, corporate vice president and general manager for enterprise solutions at AMD. Gambling could also become more interactive through gesture and face recognition on devices using the chip. AMD also sees a big opportunity for the chips in pachinko arcades in Japan, Aylor said. AMD is also targeting the chips at a broader market of graphics-hungry hardware,…
