ew study reveals how a “smart” contact lens can help identify which patients with glaucoma – a leading cause of blindness – are most likely to experience disease progression. Researchers say the smart lens could help doctors identify which glaucoma patients are at high risk for disease progression. Dr. C. Gustavo De Moraes, an associate professor of ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) in New York, NY, and colleagues reveal the success of the novel technology in the journal Ophthalmology. Glaucoma is a term for a group of conditions characterized by damage to the eye’s optic nerve, which can…

The researchers – including teams from the University of California-San Diego (UCSD), Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou and Sichuan University, both in China – describe their new regenerative medicine approach in a paper published in the journal Nature. The treatment was tested in 12 babies born with cataracts. It resulted in significantly fewer surgical complications than current treatments, say the researchers. Sight was improved in all 12 patients. One of the study leaders, Kang Zhang, a professor of ophthalmology and chief of Ophthalmic Genetics at UCSD, says: “We believe that our new approach will result in a paradigm shift in…

That app, called Hound, on Tuesday emerged from private beta on iOS and Android with data from 150 sources, including Yelp and Uber. How it works: Open the app and either tap the microphone to ask Hound a question or just say, “OK Hound.” Then speak naturally. Hound serves up basic information like weather forecasts and…
Dividend stocks tend to outperform when the stock market is uncertain. It’s been true historically, and it’s been the case again in 2016. There’s safety in stocks that have had strong balance sheets and reward shareholders with regular cash payments. Case in point: The S&P 500 is down 6 percent this year, trailing by a wide margin the S&P Dividend Aristocrats Index (-1 percent) and S&P High Yield Dividend Aristocrats Index, which is flat. “It’s a very uncertain market, and you don’t know where returns will come from, but you can expect they will be lackluster,” said Neena Mishra, director…
Jerome Segura, a senior security researcher with Malwarebytes, was recently stumped by a cyberattack he was studying. It seemed to keep vanishing. Segura often studies malvertising, which involves seeding ad networks with harmful online advertisements that then appear on websites, potentially delivering malware to a person’s computer. It’s a particularly insidious type of attack, since a person merely has to view an advertisement to become infected if their computer has a software vulnerability. “We knew there was something different that malvertisers were doing,” said Segura in a phone interview Thursday. The problem was they couldn’t replicate the attack by viewing…
