Here we are, almost a week after Ubisoft sprayed farts into my nose, and I’m still feeling a bit sick. Was it actually farts? Or was it something worse? Maybe tuberculosis, or black plague, or anthrax. Or maybe they ground up the source code for Watch Dogs and shot it straight into my nose. That would certainly explain the feelings of impending illness. Anyway, some news happened this week. Mass Effect Andromeda showed off some new game footage, Interplay put itself up for auction, Deus Ex added DX12, and Shadow Warrior 2 killed a lot of people. Like, a lot.…
A new version of the Bluetooth wireless spec will be coming to devices soon, giving users faster connectivity among devices over longer distances. The new version, Bluetooth 5, is a big upgrade over Bluetooth 4.2, the current specification. In a clear line of sight, the range of Bluetooth 5 could stretch to 400 meters, said analysts at The Linley Group in a research note this week. That means users could connect a smartphone to a Bluetooth speaker that may not even be visible. Final Bluetooth 5 specifications will be disclosed by the end of this year or early next year,…

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 was off to a great, but a quickly discovered battery defect caused Samsung to issue an unprecedented worldwide recall. We now hear the replacement stock for Portugal is already on the way and should be ready for exchange for September 19. The phablet has successfully launched in China and few other markets recently, where Samsung made sure the Note7 units don’t pack faulty batteries. There is some bad news for the USA though. The country is one of the biggest Samsung markets and the manufacturer is working hard to convince the Note7 buyers to return them…
The Fed will be staying lower for longer — a lot longer, in fact, if a forecast from a major private equity player is accurate. With the market wondering whether the U.S. central bank will hike rates at its Sept. 20-21 meeting, private equity giant KKR believes those anticipating that the Fed will resume its tightening cycle anytime soon are misreading statements from Chair Janet Yellen and others. In fact, KKR said the Fed is on a long-term dovish cycle unlikely to change for years. The firm specifically cites remarks that Yellen made at the Jackson Hole, Wyoming, summit in…

Real estate stocks are getting a place of their own in the market this week, and investors are taking notice. As of the close of trading Friday, the industry will become its own sector in the S&P 500, bringing the broad market index up to 11 divisions. The move primarily affects real estate investment trusts (REITs), moving 28 issues with nearly $600 billion in market cap out of the financial sector and into the new real estate heading. The decision came primarily because officials at S&P Dow Jones Indices believe the industry has become large enough that it should be…
