India’s first transgender college principal, Manabi Bandopadhyay, has rendered its resignation after serving for 19 months as the head of Krishnagar Women’s College.

It has been identified that social stigma, gender biasness, and non-cooperation of the teachers were the primary reasons that prompted Dr. Manabi Bandopadhyay to take such a step.

“All my colleagues went against me. Most of the students, too, were opposed to me. I always strove to restore discipline and an atmosphere conducive to academics in the college that they didn’t like. I always got cooperation from local administration, but never got any cooperation from my colleagues and students,” said Bandopadhyay.

More on the report:

Following the resignation letter received by Nadia District Magistrate Sumit Gupta, who is also the administrator of the college, from the aggrieved academician on December 27; an inquiry team comprising four members led by Joint Director of Public Instruction (DPI) RP Bhattacharjee visited the colleges for fact findings.

“I received the resignation letter from Manabi Bandopadhyay on December 27 and forwarded the same to the state higher education department. They will take a decision,” said Sumit Gupta, as reported by PTI.

She alleged that she had received a sort of non-corporation even from the students and marked that she can no longer bear the obnoxious treatment which she had been enduring ever since she took the office on June 9, 2015.
